it's a tremendous organization that serves the greater kansas city area. i've always believed that we change the world one person at a time. and what i say in my visit to safe home was exactly that -- making the difference in a person's life each and every day one person at a time. safe home provides more than a shelter for those needing a place to live to escape from abuse. they provide advocacy and counseling, an in-house attorney, assistance in finding a job. the agency also provides education in the community to prevent abuse -- further abuse, and we often think that it doesn't exist and yet this organization is making clear that the prevalence of domestic violence is known and combatted. each year safe home helps thousands of women and children reestablish their lives without violence. the employees and volunteers there are making that difference that is so important in the lives of so many. after my visit to safe home, a kansan post add question on my facebook wall. mr. bachmann said, if i came away from my safe home visit with any honest sense of ho

i also remember in the community or the city of habarask in the russian far east, we were at a hotel, and i would say that this hotel did not -- if they rate hotels in regard to the russian far east, this one had to be one of the last on the list. as we went into our rooms, i discovered that my bed was a wooden frame and then just straps. no mattress. and then one blanket and no pillows. i thought being the junior member of this codel, this was something that they assigned to me. so i went down the hall with my special key in hand and my special i.d.d. in that part of the world, that's what you do. knocked on danny's door, and he said how can i be of service to you, dear friend? and i said i'd just look to look at your accommodations thinking of course he would have a bed, and there was a wooden bed with the same kind of accommodation. no mattress and just one blanket. and he said, well, why are you interested in that bed? i said, well, i thought being a junior member that something might be better in your quarters. he got a big kick out of that. and he was always reminding me of that

this is the mantoloking bridge which connected the two cities before the storm. and here it is after the storm. you can see that this picture shows the storm surge ripped a gash right through mantoloking. these homes were all largely destroyed. as a matter of fact, nature has now changed the nature of the new jersey coastline. there are inlets where there was none before. it has totally rewritten the geography of the new jersey shoreline. so the relief package we're debating today will help us repair this bridge as well as some of the homes that were clearly lost and part of the highway that will need to be rebuilt and it will help us defend this community from the fear of this happening again. a part of the community totally being ripped out. now, while much of the damage was on the jersey shore, northern new jersey communities like little ferry as seen in this photo and moonachie saw extensive river blagojevich when a berm failed. i was actually by this location and saw fema emergency management teams as well as, of course, local police and firefighters getting
